Present bikes
These detailed listings serve as a handy reminder to myself of what components I'm actually running with.
Charge Steamer -- (2026-present)
Having sold the Tern, and then carrying my little boy on MacRide mounted to Big Wig, I then realised one day: new cargo bike. Cargo but: not electric, not heavy, not long, not expensive. Nothing modern exists. Spotted a sold Steamer on eBay, but I was too late. Few months later another one appeared and for £90 (in 2026 economy!!) I really, really could not resist. The bike was to be collected far away so I went to Moon and back to collect it. Needed new tyres + tubes + rim tape, but it's been a pleasure to ride. It feels like riding a Rolls-Royce (not that I ever driven Rolls-Royce!). Got second-hand Urban Iki Junior for the passenger. My shopping + visiting playground bike. It's actually bigger head turner than the DMR - believe it or not. Current mileage: ~170km.
DMR Trailstar -- (2025-present)
It was meant to be remarkable - a great fame and limitless love looks... Except: not really. But I always wanted a BMX (again!) so I thought a legend retro MTB will do good on BMX tracks. I built it single speed with front brake only. Truth is I'm not that good with any sort of jumps, and ya' old knees are killing me every time I climb Queen's Dr in Edinburgh (that little, steep lane up Arthur's Seat). Current mileage: ~440km.
Ragley Big Wig -- (2024-present)
I bought a frame on sale as a gift to myself for 42th birthday. Freshly divorced I thought it's newer too late to start learning some singletrack. Great fun going down, less fun going up. Big Wig has some extreme geo and it's tough game climbing anything on this bike. Recently I swapped tyres and handlebar so I can try the hype of bikepacking. It goes somehow, but the current limit seems to be around 80km and feel almost dead afterwards. Big Wig != Bikepacking. Current mileage: ~1,630km.
Past bikes
I probably had more bikes than I had girlfriends, and I forgot most of them (the bikes!) but here are some past favourites and not-so-great-as-well.
Surly Cross-Check -- (2024-2025)
There was an old CC on eBay one day. It had fork from Straggler and Hope hubs and I just could not resist. Turned out the bike was great condition. I had some wild adventures - like riding Newcastle-Seahouses-Newcastle and realising up there my front light was out (oops). Unfortunately, front disc and rear canti brake don't fit my boat. Sold to Glasgow. Regret but then canti brake... Total mileage: ~3,737km.
Tern Short Haul D8 -- (2023-2024)
I bought the Tern a little too quick... Bike had some serious loading capacity, and it was probably as loooong as your city bus. I needed a bike to take carry a toddler to explore all the playgrounds the city had to offer. But being almost 6' tall I found the geo too short and really uncomfortable. Sold to some nice guy in London, and the full bike fitted in my little Aygo(!). Total mileage: ~320km
Dahon Mu Uno -- (2012-2017)
A fun little bike I spotted on Gumtree and bought for £100...back in 2012! It was single speed, with a coaster brake. It folded nicely (Bromton still wins) so I took it onto a bus, leave at Park&Ride and ride into Oxford city centre while overtaking all the miserable (at times) drivers. Sold to Germany. Total mileage: ~760km.
All City Nature Boy -- (2014-2021)
Probaly my favourite bike ever (for now, anyway). Rode it single speed for endless happiness. FSA cranks + Velocity rims. Climbed Holme Moss when TdF boys were in town. Eventually stopped riding (child happened) and realised a 52cm size was a size too small. Total mileage: ~4,400km.
Rible 525 -- (2013-2021)
I lived few years without bicycle (how?!), but in April 2013 I ordered 525 with Campagnolo Chorus 11spd groupset. The frame was Reynolds 525 (or that's what they said) and it was a comfy ride. I did commute 60km daily, 5 times a week. I used it for club rides or 14+ hours weekend rides in The Cotswolds. Years later I modified it by changing to flat bars (bad idea!), then eventually sold the frame + fork for peanutes. Total mileage: ~10,500km.
